Pet-Safe Halloween Treats You Can Share With Your Dog

Halloween is full of sweets, smells, and excitement, and our dogs notice every bit of it. While candy bowls may be tempting, most human treats aren’t safe for pets. This year, include your pup in the fun with safe Halloween treats for dogs made from ingredients you probably already have at home.

Ingredients to Avoid

Before you start baking, let’s talk about what not to use. The American Kennel Club (AKC) warns that chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free candy), raisins, and macadamia nuts can all be toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause illness.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center adds that candy wrappers and sticks can cause choking or intestinal blockage. Always toss candy waste securely so curious noses can’t find it later.

Safe Ingredients for Homemade Dog Treats

You don’t need fancy ingredients to make festive snacks your dog will love. Start with these vet-approved staples:

  • 100% Pure Pumpkin Purée (not pie filling): Great for digestion and full of vitamin A.

  • Natural Peanut Butter: A protein-packed favorite; double-check that it’s xylitol-free.

  • Oats or Whole-Wheat Flour: Great bases for biscuit-style treats.

  • Carrots, Apples, or Bananas: Sweet, crunchy, and low in calories.

  • Sweet Potatoes: Naturally sweet and full of nutrients.
